Good evening, friends!
So…this deep dive gets a bit technical and long, so I also will be posting a short, one paragraph delineation called Total Solar Eclipse in Aries: The Bird’s Eye View for those of you who would like the information bite-size without all the astro-lingo, later tonight.
But, if you’re like me, and love all the details and technicalities, the astronomy and astrology, read on…
Okay, let’s get into… the astrology
We are going to go deep into this eclipse today and talk about eclipse basics, what the overall themes are of this eclipse for everyone in general and also for the United States, and the corresponding tarot card.
For information about how to watch or view this eclipse in your location and when it will start and end, you can visit TimeAndDate.com at this link here for those astronomical details.
Eclipse Basics
First, let’s discuss some basic eclipse theory so we are all on the same page as we go over the themes that are coming up.
There are four types of eclipses:
Total: where the Sun is blocked by the Moon completely;
Partial: where the Moon takes a “bite” out of the Sun;
Annular: where the Moon covers the center of the Sun, but not totally, so there is a ring, the “ring of fire” around the Moon; and
Hybrid: this is a combination of an annular and a total, which eclipse type you see will depend upon the location from which you are viewing the eclipse.
This eclipse is a Total eclipse with the path of totality passing over the United States of America. You can see images of this path HERE.
You can find out even more about the astronomy of this eclipse on the website Space.com by using this link here.
Second, a Solar Eclipse is a supercharged New Moon when the Sun and the Moon conjoin in the sky at the same or almost the same location from our point of view. This results in the Moon moving across the face of the sun, blocking out the light of the Sun as she passes. The Moon, then, is in between the Sun and the Earth as you can see in the picture below of this eclipse using the astronomy program Solar System Scope:
Saros Series 8 North
This particular eclipse belongs to the eclipse family, Saros Series 8 North, which you can see pictured below in the birth chart dated May 17, 1501 C.E.
I went over what a Saros Series was in the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Libra post two weeks ago, so if you’d like to go back and re-read that post you can do so here, but the basics that you need to understand as we move forward is that all eclipses are not the same. Each Saros Series, or eclipse family, starts at either the north or south pole and thus has a birth chart. Every year there are 19 North and 19 South eclipse families passing over the Earth.
This year Saros Series 8 is eclipsed, first the North family during these spring eclipses and then the South family during the fall eclipses.
I went over Saros Series 8 North’s chart interpretation in detail two weeks ago, but I want to share the main significations here again so that we can hold this flavor in our mouths as we discuss the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. The flavor of this Saros Series will add to the overall taste of this Solar Eclipse.
“Saros Series 8 North symbolizes a new beginning in the areas of communication, intelligence, learning, and curiosity that inspires one to seek out freedom to explore, socialize, and gather as much information about the world and their place in it as they can. Beliefs could be challenged with this eclipse, sending the person on an inward journey of self-discovery that leaves everyone else in the dust as they explore their mind and awareness of self-healing. Therefore, Saros Series 8 North represents a breakthrough; a new beginning in regard to how we communicate, learn, and grow intellectually that may challenge our relationships or personal lives.” (AstroMommy, 2024)
Total Solar Eclipse In Aries
Okay, now that we’ve gone over some of the basics, let’s get into this particular solar eclipse.
First, let’s take a look at the chart for the Total Solar Eclipse at 19 Aries 24’ happening at 2:20 pm ET/11:20 pm PT on Monday, April 8, 2024.
You can see the eclipse happening in Aries in the ninth house of the chart, which I cast for Washington, D.C., USA. The Path of Totality for this eclipse is across the United States and thus symbolizes a major new beginning for this country. We will touch on the mundane astrology for the USA in a bit.
The ninth house is associated with religion, beliefs, higher education, and foreign travel.
Aries is a cardinal fire sign meaning that it has the energy of initiation and change, as well as, leadership, creativity, and enthusiasm. Aries is an energy that likes to take charge and lead the way, blazing a path for all to follow. It’s the energy that fires up the engine of a jet airplane and gets it into the sky; it’s powerful, combustible, and propulsive.
Whatever house Aries rules in your natal chart will indicate the topics that will be emphasized in your personal life during this eclipse. We will discuss these in more detail in the horoscopes for all 12 signs coming soon.
The Sun at 19°Aries 24’ is at the exact degree of exaltation and represents our story, our ambitions, and our plotline. The Moon indicates our emotions, feelings, and habits, so it is as if what we feel is aligning with the plot of the storyline. It's interesting that, from our perspective on Earth, the Moon will be blocking out the Sun, almost like our emotions will be taking over and leading the way!
The Ascendant sign of this eclipse is at 16° Leo 26’ which means that there is a focus on the individual and their needs, wants, and desires to be a shining star.
The dispositor, or the host, of this eclipse in Aries, is Mars who is in Pisces and is only one degree and 24 minutes of arc away from perfecting a corporeal conjunction to Saturn.
Mars is located in the 8th house of debts, death, and financial investments—so, there’s an underlying feeling that our faith is being tested because there’s a crisis coming where a debt is about to be due. People may be feeling faithful or spiritually impassioned, inflamed, and willing to fight for what they believe in, driven by a higher power, a supreme consciousness, or a high court of law—so there is righteous martyrdom being felt--but with Mars so close to Saturn, the expression is stifled, strangled, or drowned out by Saturn’s heavy hand, leaving people feeling powerless, weak, or ineffective.
Because Mars is in the 8th house, these emotions are actually being fueled by fear, anxiety, mental anguish, and the desire to look strong, capable, and ready to defend ourselves if pushed too far. So, there may be a bit of posturing in the face of challenges, adversity, or authority laying down the law. Mars in Pisces can be enlightened and therefore wise and mature, or he could be feeling victimized by Saturn’s sternness. Saturn in Pisces is like a wise, knowledgeable counsel, wanting to advise the spiritual warrior with talk of restraint, peaceful protests, or fighting the enemy with music, theatre, and spirituality. These are major themes influencing this eclipse.
Okay, so this Total Solar Eclipse in Aries, is ruled by Mars who is averse to the eclipse itself, since he is in Pisces and the eclipse is in Aries, two signs that only see each other during contra-antiscial moments, but otherwise they are too close to witness each other. Mars has just separated from a contra-antiscion to Chiron, which acts as a hidden opposition; this may be an important piece of the puzzle.
Venus, Chiron, Mercury, and the North Node are all co-present in Aries and each one of these planets and points has something to contribute to this eclipse.
Venus will be at 4°Aries 26’ and although she is far away from this eclipse by degree, she is the dispositor of the South Node, and thus intertwined with the destiny and karma unfolding from this eclipse, meaning that our relationships and values will be affected. There could be an arrogant and assertive attitude toward doing what we want just because we want to and that may or may not get us into trouble! The south Node in Libra can indicate a decrease, a drain, or the act of succumbing to our pleasure centers, as well as things coming up or people coming back from our past. Does someone from the past come back into the picture during this eclipse? Do we give in to a guilty pleasure during this eclipse? Or are we aligning our desires with the mission at hand?
Chiron is exactly conjoined the eclipse to the degree and minute! This is really significant and means that the major new beginning in the Aries house of our chart may carry with it a sacrifice that triggers our ego wounds, vulnerabilities, or insecurities that need healing. It’s like there’s a sore spot that gets stepped on as we launch full force into the future or like an offensive dig that thrusts us into quick action, almost like a retaliation, but with Mars subdued in Pisces, the force of this retaliation is like a punch through water, it’s softened, slowed, and the shock is absorbed. We may not feel the full force until Mars ingresses into Aries, his home sign, and has full capacity to send out a hit that will be felt. It reminds me of dreams I’ve had in the past where I was being attacked by a wild animal and tried to punch the animal attacking me, but because it was a dream, I was not able to deliver any force and it was like I was hitting it with a feather and all my effort was completely useless.
Mercury in Aries retrograde is also interacting with this eclipse because not only is he five degrees away from the Moon and Sun on April 8th, but he will be going over the eclipse degree twice in the next month—once during the retrograde and then again in direct motion; three times total, if you count the first during his pre-retrograde shadow period which already took place on March 18, 2024, and when he stations direct on March 25, 2024, he will be conjoined the North Node!
Mercury symbolizes our mental processes, communications, and our intellect, and in mundane astrology, he represents the news, media, transportation, and communication. Because he is retrograde during this eclipse, we may be going back, revising, reworking, rewording, or revisiting a decision we made in March, possibly in haste or without a lot of planning. You can see Mercury in the above picture by Solar System Scope almost in alignment with this eclipse. Because he is so close to the Sun, we cannot see him at this time, but he will conjoin the Sun on April 11, 2024, and then pop back up as the morning star on April 19, 2024, just six days before he stations direct. I think we could hear something important in the news around this time that ties into this eclipse's signification and heralds coming events. Mercury as the morning star represents foresight and using our mental prowess to get ahead of a situation so that we are not caught off guard.
Lastly, we have the North Node in Aries only 4° away from this eclipse. The North Node acts as an amplifier, increasing the significations of whichever planets are near; in this case, it is the Sun, our direction and spirit, the Moon, our feelings and fortune, and Chiron, where we feel we need healing because of a vulnerability or a wound. Because of this triple conjunction, with the North Node so close, we may feel in alignment with the direction, mission, and plotline of this new beginning.
One more significant conjunction that is happening too close to this eclipse to ignore is the once every ~14 years, Jupiter/Uranus conjunction.
You can see in the picture below from Solar System Scope that Jupiter and Uranus are almost in perfect alignment with the Earth on the left, and Mars and Saturn are almost in perfect alignment on the right. We already talked about the significance of Mars and Saturn coming together on April 10, 2024, two days after the Total Solar Eclipse; representing a spiritual force meeting a solid rock, or a boundary check, that may weaken Mars’ power. Jupiter and Uranus on the other hand, conjoining on April 20, 2024, twelve days after the Total Solar Eclipse, feels like it aligns more with the birth chart delineation of Saros Series 8 North, which speaks of a breakthrough; or a shocking new beginning, sending those affected on an adventure of discovery.
Going back to the basics, Jupiter and Uranus conjoining means a big, possibly explosive, expansion of energy in the house ruled by Taurus in your chart. Jupiter brings good luck, prosperity, and abundance and Uranus represents sudden shocks, disruptions, earthquakes, and electrifying events. This upcoming conjunction is tied into this eclipse because the South Node dispositor, Venus, is also the dispositor of Taurus, the sign in which this conjunction will be. This could indicate something big happening around relationships, values, material possessions, or money, shortly after the eclipse.
The Path of Totality Through The United States
Let’s look at this eclipse again, from a mundane perspective for the United States, because the path of totality will be focusing the energy of this eclipse on this country.
Using whole sign houses, I cast this chart for Washington D.C. the country’s capital. You can see the eclipse happening in Aries in the ninth house of religion, beliefs, higher education, foreigners, and foreign travel and thus this solar eclipse could signify a new beginning that will affect religious institutions, colleges and universities, and the travel industry, especially long-distance travel by boat or airplane. The ninth house can also represent the scientific and medical communities, and the law and judicial system.
The Ascendant sign of this eclipse is at 16° Leo 26’ and if we superimpose the eclipse chart around the outside of the United States Declaration of Independence Chart below, the eclipse ascendant is located in the ninth house of the United States’ chart, which puts this Solar Eclipse in Aries in the USA’s fifth house of creative expression, entrepreneurship, and the country’s birth rate.
Last year’s Hybrid Solar Eclipse in Aries also happened in the USA’s fifth house, but the ascendant was Sagittarius, which lined up with the USA’s first house and indicated a focus on the country as a whole and how the US looked to other countries. This time the ascendant is located in the ninth house of religion, beliefs, higher education, and foreign travel, which means that the focus will be on those topics instead.
Mars fuels this new beginning in the fourth house of home, family, and the land of the country and may come from a place of fear or feeling weakened, stifled, or blocked by the fact that Mars is conjoining Saturn two days later.
Jupiter will conjoin Uranus twelve days later in the United States’ sixth house of public health, hospitals, trade unions, civil servants, and workforce.
Interestingly, the last time that Jupiter and Uranus met in Taurus was on May 7, 1941. They met at 25°Taurus 37’, conjoined the fixed star Algol. Uranus then ingressed into Gemini, the USA’s 7th house of open enemies, on August 7, 1941, four months before the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This is something we will explore a bit more in the upcoming newsletter about this conjunction.
Could this Total Solar Eclipse across the United States and the proceeding Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in the nation’s sixth house be an omen for something unexpected and catastrophic to take place on US soil? I hope not, but it has to be mentioned.
The Correlating Tarot Card to 19°Aries: III of Wands
The tarot card associated with the second decan of Aries is III of Wands.
You can see the man on this card, looking out at his merchant ships carrying his products to the hands of his customers on foreign shores. He is feeling good about himself and his good fortune. He is feeling generous and willing to collaborate and help others.
The III of Wands is a card that has to do with a project, a business, or an idea that you have set in motion already and you are watching it unfold in real-time. You have made the products and you are watching them being shipped out to customers. You are done with the planning stage of a project and now you are implementing the plan. Your million-dollar idea has gone to print.
The second decan of Aries is ruled by the Sun in Aries, who is exalted here and represents a leader, a CEO, or a prestigious individual who is enthusiastic, bold, courageous, and possibly ruthless, arrogant, and aggressive. The Sun in Aries is consciously aware of where they want to go and they are going there with passion, haste, and purpose.
The 20th degree of Aries is in the bounds of Mercury indicating that our thoughts are compatible with our actions. We have a drive to do something, change something, or see something through, and mentally we can see the logic in those decisions.
In Summary
Okay, so we have a jet airplane being fired up big time in the Aries house of our charts, indicating a new beginning, a new direction, or a new initiative taking place that is fueled by a weakened, stalled or stifled Mars in the Pisces house of our charts. We may also be experiencing an arrogance or me-first attitude around our relationships, values, or finances, but at the same time, we are having to go back over decisions we’ve previously made that we may have made too quickly. There could be a sacrifice that is to be made as we change our minds or the direction in which we are going, followed by a surprising turn of events that propels us far into the future in a powerful way!
Let me put this into a story so that it hopefully makes more sense…
Once upon time, there was a lady who loved dancing and she was taking ballroom dancing lessons. She was asked to perform in the upcoming recital, but it cost money, and she made the responsible and adult decision and said, “I wish I could, but I couldn’t possibly.” Then Mercury went retrograde and she was kicking herself in the butt for turning the opportunity down. She really wanted to dance, but there were blocks, limitations, and boundaries telling her “No,” not to mention the sacrifice she would have to make of her time and money, which would literally take food off the table for her family; the guilt of being a terrible mother weighed her down and stopped her from giving in to her selfish desires.
But then, she had a sudden flash of insight and some support from a surprising source and spent the next four weeks figuring out how to make it happen! She could see the future now! Her on stage and the crowd cheering and chanting her name as Venus and Mars ingressed into their own signs the week of the performance, like a sexy and sassy couple of ballroom dancers in the heavens!
