Mid-stride I stop and remove my shoe and shake the painful pebble from inside of it out onto the ground. I slide my foot inside and immediately extinguish my cigarette butt on the sidewalk. The ash smears across the damp pavement like powdered sugar spreading across a hairy lip. I brush my knees out of habit and resume walking past the stylish shoe store and the gown boutique as briskly as I ever avoided a forever 21 at the shopping mall. I stay focused on the path unfolding before me, down to the ocean, out past the lighthouse soon it is only rocks surrounding me and I feel my body relax. I lay down in the warm sun and mindlessly roll my squishy stretch marks into a fleur-de-lis I feel my stress and worry become a football and I imagine launching it across space.
