New Moon in Cancer=New Word Poem, List #3!
Due on the next Full Moon, July 13, 2022.
I love starting the new moon cycles with poetry. Poetry is so soothing to my soul and it’s a practice that really helps me creatively put my thoughts and feelings into words in a way that I really enjoy. I hope that these word poem prompts are interesting and enjoyable for you all too!
I was introduced to the concept of a “word poem” prompt by my beautiful sister many years ago. We used to create word lists together, using different techniques, and then read our poems aloud to each other. It created a unique bond between us. Eventually, over the years, we formed many groups with other women, creating word lists and sharing our poetry together.
There is something really special about writing, reading, and listening to poetry written by yourself and your friends—it forms a strong intimate connection and I am so grateful for the experience.
I want to share this lovely practice/experience with you all, too! That’s why I started writing word lists for this newsletter. Not only does it give me a prompt to work from, but it also creates an intimacy through poetry with you that I don’t believe could be formed otherwise.
I truly hope you enjoy it and decide to participate! I know it’s scary to write poetry sometimes and even scarier to share your poetry! But, I invite you to try. The benefits outweigh the minor discomforts, in my opinion. And…there are no rules that you have to share, but I would love to know if you have been inspired to write, nonetheless. Send me a reply and let me know that this little poetry practice inspired you, that would make my day! So, let’s get into it…
How to play:
Below you will find this month’s word list—from it you are to write a poem using the exact words listed in the order they are in. For example, the opening to my poem might be: The amazing frog had to get through the hoop without hitting its own shadow….and so on until all 15 words have been used. There are no limits to the length of your poem or to how many words are in between the words in the list. All of that is up to you!
That’s it. There are no other rules, just use all 15 words as they are (do not change their tense or add suffixes to them) and in the order presented.
On the next Full Moon, I will share the poem I write here on Substack, and if you’d like, you can share your poem with me, too! Either add your poem as a comment to mine or reply to the email. You can share on social media if you’d like (I share my poems on Instagram), and if you do, use the hashtag #astromommywordpoem so we can all see our poems in one place! Thanks for participating!
