The Dark Night Settles
By AstroMommy
Darkness settles, like a Chef on a recipe
Holding me in its hands, like a Friday night holds infinite potential
Yesterday, we fought, or maybe the day before, I can’t remember
Today I am yawning from exhaustion
and the generality, no…
the commonality of the incident
Like eating yogurt
We fight like eating yogurt
often
a standing item on the grocery list
a staple
Can there be a way to terraform our relationship
Into something that even a minnow could survive?
We wobble on the instability of the eggshells we scatter
Like little traps to catch field mice for dinner
We do it to survive
And I walked right into yours
the trap set for me
I don’t even think you realized that you had set it
But you did
Laid it out, like an envelope awaiting a letter
I saw it too
Like seeing an embrace before it lands upon you
I saw the indentations in the earth over the explosives
I tried to stop
To avoid setting them off
To smother the ember
But it caught fire
And all there was left to do was rappel down the slippery slope
To the Martian pit as lightly as possible
All the while feeling the yearn to turn back
Walk away
Let it go
Hang up
Do the noble thing
The right thing
But instead, I fought back
Got grabbed in the snares and wrestled hard to break free
So hard that it knocked you down too
And now the dark night settles,
And I wonder where you are and whether or not you are warm enough
Because Mom, believe it or not, I love you…
Even if I am a scrappy bitch.

Mine came out a little dark, as well...
Chef on Saturday
Chef on Saturday, cause the last one quit Friday,
Yesterday applying elsewhere-yawning from a late Thursday coping.
The generality of the cook– same as all others
till the title changes
The plain yogurt contributes to their made up parfait
Your crazy is somehow now the nuts that terraform the derelict and sour white nothing of corporate existence into a delicacy of texture and notes of… whatever.
Chosen under pretense as fruit that’s delectable- or at least in season?
Okay, also cheap, and available this weekend on short notice.
Value added due to unprecedented immediate need.
The hooked minnow- technically alive as it serves its captor’s purpose
Dances its cooperative wobble.
Emotes gratitude toward feigned generosity of purpose.
Hooked, but at least returned to the sea.
Swimming painfully is better than starving in a bucket designed to look like all there is until a better offer comes.
Next Friday promises a fatter envelope- maybe.
The once cook turned chef returns home to a lover’s embrace.
Love's ember glows momentarily brighter with the hope that a new name for an old rose will deliver more of the same.
Souls rapel- to the next landing of woe.
Touch down lightly, and breathe for a minute.
Just as reaching a small peak leads to the discovery of a greater ascent,
descending illuminates yet deeper struggles
To yearn for for adequacy feels hollow.
Subjective satisfaction, just out of reach.
The noble intention of the indoctrinated, manipulated by wholesale irreverence to the greater human condition.
